EDITORIAL: The Gulf's bird toll
Windmills slaughter more than oil spill

Lt. Jamison Ferriel, Dr. Sharon Taylor and AET Everett Hill release
pelicans into the Indian River Lagoon on Sunday. About a dozen birds tainted with
oil from the gulf spill were released at Merritt Island National Wildlife
Refuge. The birds were treated in Louisiana and flown Sunday on board a
United States Coast Guard HC 144 aircraft with a crew of 4 and veterinarian
Dr. Sharon Taylor with US Fish and Wildlife. (Associated Press)
While several million gallons of crude oil have poured into the Gulf of
Mexico since April, nature has been far more resilient than environmental
doomsayers would like. The left is counting on images of oiled pelicans and
lingering devastation to build urgency for unpopular policies like
"cap-and-trade." Nature is refusing to cooperate, and the so-called environmentalists
are proving to be the true hazard.
President _Obama_ (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/barack-obama/) ,
criticized for the lax federal response to the spill, is eager to put the
incident behind him. On Saturday, the _White House_
(http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/white-house/) released a photograph of the commander in
chief frolicking in the sheltered waters at Alligator Point in Panama City
Beach, Fla. The message is that the Gulf is back in business.
In some respects, it is. According to the latest figures, cleanup crews
have collected 6,286 birds impacted by the spill. A total of 4,359 were found
dead, and 1,927 were alive but covered in oil. A good deal of luck kept
these numbers far below those seen in the wake of the 1989 _Exxon_
(http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/exxon/) Valdez disaster. The Deepwater Horizon
explosion happened much farther from shore, in warmer waters, with the
force of the Mississippi River offering some protection to the coastal marsh
zone.
"As tragic as it is to have this many birds affected, either dead or
injured ... a couple months ago we were fearing for the worst, and this is a
pretty low number, all things considered," Fish and Wildlife Service spokesman
_David Patte_ (http://www.washingtontimes.com/topics/david-patte/) told
The Washington Times. The effort is far from over, as fall migration season
draws closer and teams race to clean up as much of the remaining oil as
possible before an estimated 30 million birds descend on the region.
The death toll of the "worst environmental disaster in history" pales in
comparison to the carnage wrought in the name of environmentalism. For
example, the Altamont Pass, Calif., wind farm's cruel blades pulverize 4,700
birds each year, according to the National Audubon Society. Victims of this
green power plant include golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, American kestrels
and burrowing owls. The windmill industry defends itself by claiming newer
turbine blades turn more slowly, making it less likely that Tweety will
meet his maker. It may only change the victim. According to a 2008 study of
the high-tech wind farm in Judith Gap, Mont., the project's 90 turbines
killed fewer birds, 406, but three times as many bats - 1,206.
The impact of the Gulf oil spill on tourism and the fishing and shrimp
industries cannot be denied, but the wounds will soon heal. Environmentalism's
avian holocaust will continue - 33,000 birds annually, according to a 2002
Fish and Wildlife Service estimate - until government pulls the plug on
subsidies for inefficient, unnecessary and deadly windmills.

A Gulf Science Blackout
By LINDA HOOPER-BUI
Baton Rouge, La.
THE Deepwater Horizon blowout may be capped and the surface oil slick
dispersed, but the scientists' job has just begun: hundreds of us are
working in and around the gulf to determine the long-term environmental
impact of the drilling disaster.
Although we are all doing needed research, we're not receiving equal money
or access to the affected sites. Those working for BP or the federal
government's Natural Resource Damage Assessment program are being given the
bulk of the resources, while independent researchers are shoved aside.

The Children's Museum proposal will negatively impact birds in the
northern
end of Grant Park. Please fill out the survey to keep open space open for
birds.

Hi All,
The Chicago Park District is preparing to make changes to the area they
are calling North Grant Park - the northeast corner of Grant Park
including the location of the proposed Chicago Children's Museum.
Because of water leakage into the East Monroe Street Parking Garage,
some changes must be made. However, the Chicago Park and its architects
are keeping their cards close to their chest regarding plans for the
museum. As far as we know, the Chicago Children's Museum is forging
ahead
with their plans to build in Grant Park.
A survey is being circulated by the Chicago Park District to collect
public input. Please participate and be heard! Share the link with your
fellow park lovers.

At a public meeting with the architect, one attendee expressed the
simple concern that any design for the park should be true park, and
not include shopping. The architect's response? A space this size would
almost certainly include some type of selling.
The Grant Park East Parking Garage lease deal allowed for only a
relatively modest budget of $30 million for resurfacing the garage roof.
However, at public meetings the possibility of grander (and more
expensive!) plans have been suggested. An August 7 report in Chicago
Gazette mentioned costly proposed changes including narrowing Monroe
drive and building an underpass at Queen's landing (Lake Shore Drive at
Buckingham fountain, formerly a pedestrian crossing). No information
about these or other current proposals is posted on the website for the
North Grant Park project.
As plans for changes to Grant Park grow ever more elaborate and
expensive, who do you think will end up shouldering the bill? And who
will benefit - the people of Chicago, or private interests including the
Chicago Children's Museum, restaurateurs and vendors?
Best Regards,
Peggy Figiel
