For those birding in Cook County only:

This year both the Forest Preserve District of Cook County (FPDCC) and =
the Chicago Park District (CPD) would love to have birders send them a =
copy of their bird sightings, especially for the nesting season.

Both entities would like to work closer with birders and other =
volunteers, both to receive the information that we gather, and also to =
have a closer working relationship as far as getting input on the sites =
that birders go to.

Mary van Haaften of the Park District, along with Nathan Schroeder, has =
worked with area birders on a number of park projects and habitat =
improvements, and wish to continue to do so. But they would also like =
us to send them a copy of their bird reports (they also want to post =
sightings in the field houses if possible); this was tried in the past, =
but only a few birders followed through.

In regards to the FPDCC, Judy Pollock, Rebecca Blazer, Conrad Fialkowski =
and myself met last month with Jim Phillips (birder and fisheries =
biologist) and Bill Koenig (volunteer co-ordinator) to see how birders =
and the forest preserve district could work closer together. Judy has =
mentioned this in a few previous postings. Besides having birders =
work more closely with the various preserve stewards, and the district =
itself (Bill as the contact person), they would also like copies of your =
bird reports.

What I do, and suggest that more birders to do if possible (and if they =
are willing to), is enter my bird sightings in the E-bird/BCN website ( =
http://www.ebird.org/bcn/ *
a permanent repository where managers, researchers and other birders =
can enter/store and look at numerous sightings, including much of the =
old Cook County Nesting Season Bird Census data now!). Before =
confirming, I copy and then paste that info (location and species info) =
into an e-mail, and send it to the proper person. A few additional =
explanatory comments can also be added if you like.

For Chicago Parks, please send your reports to Nathan Schroeder, at =
Schroder-Nathan@aramark.com , and for Forest Preserves in Cook County, =
send your reports to Jim Phillips at jphillips61@comcast.net . (Bill =
Koenig's e-mail address is wkoenig@cookcountygov.com .

* there are a number of locations already logged in - to check on =
'hotspots', click on the hotspot link, then type in Cook (County) and IL =
(State) and you will see numerous spots already available. Also, you =
can use the mapping ability to enter additional locations that you bird =
at, that are not already in the site list. Lee Ramsey can also help =
if you have trouble.

Thanks so much!
