Subject: [birdwire] URGENT - Endangered Species Act under attack - HELP =
NOW

Dear BirdWire Subscriber,

The federal government has proposed new rules for the registration of =
hazardous pesticides that will sharply limit protections for wildlife =
under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). We have an opportunity to oppose =
these rules and urgently need your help to persuade Congress to act. On =
June 5th, members of the House of Representatives will deliver a letter =
to Interior Secretary Gale Norton urging her to rescind the proposed =
rules. Please contact your Congress person TODAY and ask him/her to sign =
on to this letter (sample wording provided below). For information on =
who your U.S. Representative is and how to contact him/her, visit =
http://www.house.gov/writerep/, where you can perform a quick and simple =
search by zip code.

Background
The ESA requires that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) =
consult with scientists at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service when =
registering a pesticide to determine what protections are needed for =
threatened and endangered wildlife. This interagency consultation =
process is crucial to prevent the EPA from ignoring it's own data and =
favoring the pesticide industry over America's rarest species. =
Pesticides kill millions of birds and other species each year. Bald =
Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, Piping Plovers, and Golden Eagles are just =
some of the species that have suffered from pesticide poisonings in =
recent years.=20

Act Now
A number of legislators are waging a campaign to urge Secretary Norton =
to rescind the new U.S. EPA rules on wildlife consultation. Their =
letter, the Grijalva-Capps-Berman-Solis letter opposing the =
administration's rollbacks of pesticide protections for endangered =
species, has 38 signatures and will go to Secretary Norton on June 5, =
2004. It is vital that your Congress person join this campaign; the last =
day for legislators to sign the letter is June 4, 2004, so act now to =
make sure your Representative gets on the list.

Please call or e-mail your Congressional Representative TODAY. To find =
out who your U.S. Representative is, and how to contact him/her, visit =
http://www.house.gov/writerep/, where you can perform a quick and simple =
search by zip code.

As of May 28, the following legislators have signed on to the letter:
Ra=FAl M. Grijalva, Lois Capps, Howard L. Berman, Hilda L. Solis, Edward =
J. Markey, Chris Van Hollen, John W. Olver, Barney Frank, Maurice D. =
Hinchey,=20
Jay Inslee, John Conyers, Jr., Dale E. Kildee, Michael M. Honda, Barbara =
Lee, George Miller, Sander M. Levin, Grace F. Napolitano, Danny K. =
Davis, Jim=20
McDermott, Neil Abercrombie, Sam Farr, Nick Lampson, Dennis J. Kucinich, =
Adam B. Schiff, Tom Lantos, Rosa L. DeLauro, Ed Case, Jerrold Nadler, =
John Olver, Earl Blumenauer, Maxine Waters, Janice D. Schakowsky, Robert =
Wexler, James P. Moran, Susan A. Davis, Elijah E. Cummings, Bernard =
Sanders, Lloyd Doggett, Betty McCollum, Sherrod Brown.

Sample Letter:

Dear [Congressperson],

I am a resident of your Congressional District and strongly oppose the =
administration's plan to weaken current protections for endangered =
species. By allowing the Environmental Protection Agency to shut fish =
and wildlife experts out of the process of determining whether certain =
pesticides may detrimentally affect imperiled fish and wildlife, these =
species will be placed at further risk.

I support strong protections for endangered species. Please sign the =
Grijalva-Capps-Berman-Solis letter urging Secretary Norton to withdraw =
this dangerous proposal.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
[Your Address]=20
