Let me echo and emphasize Scott's message -- The City of Chicago and the
Chicago Park District tend to go with the request from the loudest citizens group.
Thus, be sure to contact Mayor Daley too. The City website has a contact
page that makes it easy --
http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/home.do

I believe the people who want to turn Wooded Isle into a dog park (which is
their ultimate request) are the people who have stated (over and over) that
they take their dogs to Wooded Isle specifically so they can run wild without any
concern -by the owner- about cleaning up after the dogs.

It would be useful if you also supported banning dogs from all nature areas
in the Chicago Park District.

Fellow Bird Conservation Enthusiasts,

As many of you know, the Chicago Park District has been working to make
Jackson Park's Wooded Island as bird-friendly as possible. As part of this, they
designated Jackson Park's Wooded Island off limits to dogs. There is currently
an effort underway by some Hyde Park residents to revoke this dog ban.

If you have a few minutes, I encourage you to compose a quick message to
David Doig, General Superintendent of the Chicago Park District, showing your
support for the continuation of the dog ban on Wooded Island. Some points to
raise include:

 - dogs have access to almost all other parks in Chicago
 - dogs can disrupt and otherwise negatively affect the "birding experience"
 - dogs can potentially harm birds, either directly (by chasing, etc.) or
indirectly (by forcing birds to stop feeding, become exposed to predators, etc.)
 - migratory birds are stressed and vulnerable enough during migration; they
need all the help they can get, particularly in urban areas where appropriate
habitat is scarce
 - people, including birders, deserve a place to enjoy nature without the
disturbance of dogs

Please send your comments to David Doig (david.doig@chicagoparkdistrict.com)
and cc: the Jackson Park Advisory Council via Gary Ossewaarde
(garyossewaarde@yahoo.com).

Or, if you prefer to send regular mail:
