Here’s the latest on the COMMON TERN colony at Great Lakes.

Most of the young birds have left the enclosure.  However, 3 very young
chicks remain, much too small for banding, so the adults should remain in
the area for another two weeks or so.  Meanwhile, a total of 34 birds
successfully fledged, by far the most in almost 3 decades at the only site
in the state.   Overall, we counted 35 adult birds from the enclosure and
elsewhere on the island and 18 juveniles (all previously banded and flight
capable).

Here are our other observations in the hour we spent there between 10:30 and
11:30 this morning, with much higher than normal water levels.

As always, there were very high numbers (in the hundreds) of RING-BILLED
GULL and DOUBLE CRESTED CORMORANT, and smaller numbers of MALLARDS, CANADA
GEESE, and HERRING GULL.

Once again, we ask you to keep a sharp eye peeled for any banded juvenile
FORSTER’S (from the colony at Grass Lake), or COMMON TERNS.  Please be alert
for 1st year FORSTER'S or COMMONS that may be seen over any inland body of
water or along the lakefront. The FORSTER'S have a blue band on the left leg
and the COMMON a green band on the left leg.  If you observe a bird please
advise me or Brad Semel at IDNR.

Access to Great Lakes does seem to be easier recently.  The concrete
barricades at the Main Gate entranceway have been removed and I know of no
birders who have been denied admittance in the last two weeks (but it’s not
guaranteed).  Remember to have valid state registration, proof of insurance
and your current driver’s license.

Finally, the time of our workday was inadvertently listed from 10 AM to 1
PM.  The correct time is 9 until 12, and it will take place on September 20,
and we need help from more birders!  We have a chance to turn Great Lakes
into a real birding Mecca.  We will be obtaining a grant to increase the
area of the colony, improve the fencing and create more and better shorebird
habitat.  Now with easier access, it will be a wonderful birding destination
