IBET and BCNnet people-

As most of you know, COMMON TERNS and FORSTER’S TERNS are endangered species
in Illinois, but the conservation story on both is very exciting.

Grass Lake, Chain-O-Lakes State Park in northwest Lake County, was a
historically rich nesting area for these birds. Up until 1939, when the
hydrology began to be managed for recreational boating, Grass Lake was quite
shallow with extensive areas of emergent vegetation, ideal nesting grounds
for a variety of wetland species, including many colonies of FORSTER’S
TERNS. In recent years, however, as the lake is now primarily boating
habitat, these birds have not bred.

During the current breeding season, Brad Semel of the Illinois Department of
Natural Resources, IDNR created an area of artificial nesting habitat, no
more than 20x10 meters square. It consisted of dredge spoil, special
cylindrical containers of burlap, called geotubes, material from old duck
blinds, and modeled decoys of the birds with taped calls. The result was
phenomenal in that the FORSTER’S not only nested, but we banded 87 young
fledglings. This is the only such colony in the entire state.

The COMMON TERN, another species that nests nowhere else in Illinois, has
had another good year at Great Lakes, partially as a result of the good work
on expanding the habitat at the Great Lakes marina by a large and
enthusiastic group of birder/volunteers last September, 2002. So far this
year we have banded 36 young COMMON TERNS, almost 50% more than last year,
and there are still more eggs and nestlings to be banded.

We are asking all birders to be alert for 1st year FORSTER’S or COMMONS that
may be seen over any inland body of water or along the lakefront. The
FORSTER’S have a blue band on the left leg and the COMMON a green band on
the left leg. If you observe a bird please advise me or Brad Semel,
bsemel@dnrmail.state.il.us <mailto:bsemel@dnrmail.state.il.us> .

We will be having another Workday, on Saturday, 20 September, from 10 until
1. As security continues high at Great Lakes, I will need the names of all
volunteers beforehand. As we did last year, we will probably meet in a
nearby shopping center, and go by shuttle on to the base. There will be
snacks and the possibility of seeing migrants while we clear brush and
otherwise improve the habitat. If any of you has a pass to the base, please
advise me, as it will help facilitate car-pooling.

Bear in mind there is a strong possibility of seeing outstanding migrants.
A few days ago I saw an AMERICAN AVOCET; last year sharp-eyed Chuck Wescott
found a LE CONTE’S SPARROW, which he showed to many of the volunteers.
Earlier this year WILLET, LEAST TERN, BLACK TERN, AMERICAN BITTERN, and a
variety of other species were all observed. Please set aside September 20
to help and add a life bird or two.
