Ameren Microgrid: The utility-scale microgrid that seamlessly islands rate-paying customers

Wednesday, September 12, 2018

S&C Electric

About the Topic

The Ameren Microgrid in Champaign, Illinois is a 1MW, utility-scale microgrid that integrates four Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and powers approximately 200 rate-paying customers. Using a distributed microgrid controller platform, the system can seamlessly transfer from grid connected mode to islanded operation using energy storage or natural gas generation. The protection system utilizes adaptive relaying and IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging for advanced protection. Operational since 2016 and awarded PEER v2 Gold certification in 2018, this presentation investigates the technical details of the design, testing, commissioning, operations, and future of the microgrid.

About the Speaker
