Dinner and a Movie: Sierra Club/COS Movie Night
Environmental Documentary Ghost Bird
Sunday, Sept. 19
5:00 p.m.
Sierra Club and the Chicago Ornithological Society are hosting a social
event to view the new critically-acclaimed environmental documentary, Ghost
Bird, by director Scott Crocker.
Ghost Bird explores the remarkable rediscovery of the Ivory-billed
Woodpecker in the swamps of Arkansas, taking a closer look at the role politics,
science and culture took in shaping the unprecedented recovery effort.
Ghost Bird features insightful interviews with David Sibley (best-selling
author and bird illustrator), Dr. Rick Prum (Macarthur recipient and Yale
University’s Curator of Ornithology), Dr. Jerome Jackson (biologist and the
world’s foremost expert on Ivory-bills), and Nancy Tanner (the only living
person to closely observe Ivory-bills).
The New York Times wrote: “Scott Crocker has turned a bird-watching tale
into a multilayered story that will fascinate practically everybody in Ghost
Bird, a witty, wistful documentary…” New York Magazine named Ghost Bird
Critic’s Pick, calling it “spellbinding…a cosmic lament for the forest
primeval and man’s search for environmental redemption.”
The film is being screened at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago, 164
North State Street (near the intersection of State and Lake Streets).
Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for students, $5 for Siskel Film Center members.
Interested in attending? We’ll meet in the theater lobby between 4:30 and
4:45 p.m. Look for the dark green Sierra Club t-shirts. If you’re late,
just buy a ticket, watch the movie and look for us in the lobby after the film.
Afterward, we’ll move over to the nearby Elephant & Castle Pub for a pint
and dinner for anyone who is interested.
COS has another great program happening on September 19 - The Birds of
Ecuador - with Michael Retter at REI at 1466 N. Halsted. There should be
plenty of time for people to attend both events if they wish.
Please RSVP to Christine Williamson at birdchris at aol.com or 773/935-8439
(evenings).
