TITLE:                         Restoration Interns and Supervisor
LOCATION:                 Forest preserves in Cook County, Illinois
DURATION:                September through November 2006

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Three Restoration Interns and one Intern Team Leader are needed for the management and restoration of wetlands, prairies, savannas and woodlands in the 68,000 acres of Cook County forest preserves.  Interns will work on a variety of projects developed in collaboration among Forest Preserve District and Audubon staff and volunteer Master Stewards. Interns conduct brush and weed management using a variety of tools including backpack herbicide sprayers, chainsaws, and hand tools.   They may also assist with seed gathering, seed planting and endangered species monitoring and protection.   Interesting, educational, and challenging outside work with a dynamic project.  Applicants should have a commitment to conservation.  Course work and experience in resource management, ecology or natural sciences is helpful.  This is a great way to learn natural areas management.  Part-time, short-term positions with flexible schedules.  Fall Session:  Sept. 5, 2006 – Nov. 30, 2006 (there is flexibility these dates). $8.50/hour for interns and $10.25/hour for team leader.  

 KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

·        Experience or ability to quickly learn to safely use basic maintenance tools, including chainsaw.

·        Ability to quickly study and pass Illinois herbicide operator test.

·        Ability to follow instructions and make independent decisions appropriately.

·        Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.

 WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

·        Ability to perform tasks requiring physical exertion, outdoors, in all weather conditions and on difficult terrain.

·        Work requires physical exertion and/or physical strain.  

·        Availability to work a flexible schedule that fits with other interns, either weekdays or weekends.

 
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:

·        May have occasional contact with members of the public visiting the preserve.

·        Ability to interact with preserve visitors and to convey basic preserve information.

 
Those applying for the supervisory position should also possess:

·        Ability to supervise a small group of Restoration Interns.

·        Ability to make independent decisions, and maintain work ethic and team spirit.
