The Chicago Tribune (www.chicagotribune.com <http://www.chicagotribune.com/>
) has a story in today's issue that covers the park district's plans for the
concert venue at Northerly Island. The perspective of the rendering on
their website is as if the artist was sitting on top of the Adler
Planetarium.

The bigger concern, from a bird perspective, will be the activities held on
the island this summer, such as Family Adventure Days, where the kids can
run around....and possibly stomp on nests. I'm working this issue but it
would be nice if the other Chicago birding clubs weighed in too.

We need volunteers to look for nesting sites. The park staff seems very
interested in roping off those areas once they are identified but they don't
have the resources or skills to find the sites. If you are interested in
helping, please contact me. I'll work out some notification process with
the park district staff.

We all have to remember that Northerly Island is going to be a "nature
park," which is different from a 'preserve' or sanctuary. What that means
in total will be determined during the public planning process. Already the
park district has posted a large No Dog sign at the entrance. But that is no
'dogs' - not 'no kids running around and doing kids things.' So for the
immediate future, we have to help structure the activities so that both
people and wildlife can use the island.
