[BCNnet] Help needed in McHenry County

BCNnet friends,

During the past several months the Bird Conservation Network has been
working with local activists to urge the McHenry County Board to oppose a
permanent Trap-Neuter-Release program for feral cats being tested in McHenry
County. I testified to the Board in September and the decision was
postponed until January. The following emails are self-explanatory. The
local people need our help and if you can possibly travel to McHenry County
next Tuesday morning it would mean a lot in helping to fight this very
misguided program.

Thanks very much.

Hi Cat & Bird lovers,

I sent the following to the Northwest Herald today. Unfortunately, it may
not go in until after the board meeting on January 3rd! Ugh! I second
Darlene's plea for us to turn out in numbers at that meeting. So far, it
has been only two or three of us showing up at these meetings. The
so-called "cat" people have been the primary ones communicating with the
board members. To the board, it looks like almost no one cares if TNR goes
through. Most of the county reps I've spoken to haven't heard from anyone
voicing against this misguided effort.

Stacy

P.S. Remember, most of are cat people and I believe ones that truly do care
about cats.

Letter to the Editor of Northwest Herald:

In January, our elected County Board officials will take another look at the
Trap-Neuter-Release program being tested in McHenry County. Their vote will
determine the future of TNR and of the impact of feral, free-roaming cats in
our county. In addition to public health risks, native wildlife impacts,
and property owner issues discussed in many public forums, I'd like to add
the following:

Trap-Neuter-Release of Feral Cats Encourages Cat Abandonment. When
irresponsible cat "owners" find out McHenry County "manages" stray and feral
cats, they are more likely to dump here. Word will get out and citizens from
surrounding counties will drive "to the country" of McHenry County to dump!

We wouldn't intentionally release other non-native species to invade our
native landscape. On the contrary, we spend volunteer time, donations and
tax dollars trying to rescue native landscapes from invasives. Why would we
spend some of these same resources maintaining exotics?

Would we trap, neuter and release unwanted dogs into our neighborhoods? Why
the double standard? Until we change the paradigm of disposability of cats,
people will continue to dump them. TNR is not the answer. It is not good
for wildlife, or cats!

Apparently there will be a County Board Meeting this coming Tuesday,Jan.3 at
9 am-I assume at the new county building on Ware Rd. Is any one from
Audubon going to attend?? I would think we could attend just to show our
numbers as well as to speak. There should be a bunch of us or it won't do
any good.

Darlene
