Between June 11 and 21, 2004, you are invited to join us for the
Grassland Bird Blitz - an effort to count every grassland bird in the
Chicago REgion.

The Chicago region supports critical habitat for grassland birds =96 a
group that has declined more than 90% in the last half century in the
Midwest.

Chicago Wilderness is embarking on a detailed, regional conservation plan
to increase habitat for grassland birds. To succeed, we need to identify
all important and potentially important sites and count the birds in as
many as possible. Last year we got a good start on many sites, and
this year we hope to get data for the rest. We=92ll learn the
relative population size and distribution of rare and important species,
and we=92ll identify sites that have great potential for grassland bird
habitat. In the future, we=92ll track changes and learn how our
habitat management efforts are affecting grassland birds.

If you can identify the grassland birds and would like to spend a morning
counting them with a team or on your own, please contact:

at 847-965-1150 or jpollock@audubon.org,
rblazer@audubon.org

Many really wonderful grassland sites still need coverage - see the
list at the end of the message for some of them.

Note: If you already cover a grassland for the BCN Census, your
June 2004 data will be included in the Grassland Bird Blitz.
