Dear Birders and Bird Conservationists:

Over the next few days, a portion of Montrose meadow will be roped off in preparation for native planting and seeding. Preparation will include
mowing and tilling (inside the fenced area only), followed by seeding. In September, the seeded area will be planted with thousands of native
wildflowers and grasses including yellow coneflower, wild bergamot, little bluestem, prairie dropseed and many others. After planting, a low temporary fence will be installed to protect the area as the
plants and seed become established. The completed area will soon look
similar to the colorful wildflower areas nearby that were recently planted by volunteers. This assumes the sparrows don't eat all the seed...

Your help is needed. Please join the Volunteers at Montrose Point, the
Chicago Park District, and ComEd/Exelon for a volunteer workday on Saturday, September 11 from 9 am - noon. Gloves, tools, and refreshments will be provided. For more information about the workday, contact Angela Sturdevant at (312) 742-4072.
For general questions about the habitat improvements, please call me at the phone number below.

Funding for this habitat project has been generously provided by ComEd, an Exelon Company.

Good birding,

Mary Van Haaften, Natural Areas Manager
Chicago Park District
