Model plane field could be grounded=20
By Russell Lissau Daily Herald Staff Writer
Posted 4/7/2004=20
Model-airplane enthusiasts likely have until the end of the week to =
practice takeoffs, barrel rolls and other maneuvers at a popular flying =
field near Wauconda.=20

The Lake County Forest Preserve District's development, restoration and =
planning committee on Tuesday tentatively approved the permanent closure =
of the airplane field at Lakewood Forest Preserve.=20

If the district's finance and administrative committee ratifies the =
decision at its meeting Friday, planes will be grounded at Lakewood =
effective sunset that day.=20

The proposed closing was chiefly prompted by the appearance near the =
field of sandhill cranes, a bird considered threatened by Illinois =
environmental agencies. Local and state officials believe the =
radio-controlled planes would disturb the birds and break state laws =
protecting their existence.=20

Additionally, horseback riders, other Lakewood visitors and area =
residents have complained about the noise from the planes since the =
field opened last year.=20

About 20 supporters and opponents of the airfield crammed into the =
committee's meeting room Tuesday. Many spoke about the matter, on both =
sides of the issue.=20

"Birds crash into the Sears Tower all the time - are we going to take =
that down?" said Bob Grazier of Wadsworth. "It's very nice to take care =
of the birds, but people are the highest species here."=20

Several residents said the equestrians and their horses need protection =
from the planes, too. Roy Davis of Mundelein recounted the story of a =
rider who was badly injured last year when her horse reportedly was =
spooked by a plane.=20

Forest district officials considered abolishing the field last year, but =
delayed their decision until receiving an opinion from the Illinois =
Department of Natural Resources. That judgment arrived last week and =
recommended the field's closure to protect the birds' habitat.=20

The committee approved closing the field with a 2-1 vote. Member Randy =
Whitmore wanted to save the site but was outvoted by members Carol =
Calabresa and Carol Spielman.=20

"Unfortunately, whether we like it or not, the site that we have doesn't =
seem to be compatible," said Spielman, a Highland Park Democrat.=20

Committee leader Judy Martini did not vote.=20

To make up for the all-but-official closing, forest leaders are =
considering reconfiguring and improving the district's other airplane =
field at Van Patten Woods near Wadsworth.=20

The district will reimburse anyone who bought a permit to fly at =
Lakewood this year and does not want to patronize the Van Patten field. =
Also, members of the Sky Knights Aeromodeling Team, a local group of =
model-airplane owners, will be reimbursed $1,500 for costs they incurred =
in establishing the Lakewood field.=20

The finance committee is scheduled to discuss the matter about 10 a.m. =
Friday at the district's main office, 2000 N. Milwaukee Ave. =
Libertyville.=20
