Dear BCN,
I think the main thing here is that we all want better habitat for birds an=
d
obviously there is a significant deer problem. I for one am very intereste=
d
in the most humane solutions possible.

I do wonder if the FP might be interested in a contraceptive program after
their initial culling activities. It sounds like the feeling is that
something has to happen immediately to reduce the deer herds.

One article I found noted a 50% reduction in deer populations through the
use of contraceptives. I think that this device may provide a more humane
and long term method of population control for deer . I don=B9t consider
shooting 150 deer a year, ad infinitum, to be a great solution, if only
because the same problem recreates itself annually.

One thing I really don=B9t understand is how shooting a deer with a dart is
less humane than killing it with a bullet. It sounds like one of the
programs actually administers the contraceptive in a dart that also dyes th=
e
deer around the injected area. This way they have an automatic way to
recognize which does have been treated.

I will look into this further and post back if I find more interesting info=
.
I hope to learn more about the specifics of what has been tried locally as
well. I know that this is a subject that has been considered carefully by
many of you and I look forward to learning more about the experiences here.

Thanks for all of the insights on this issue.
I appreciate the research by Judy as well.

I found these links on the subject:

http://magazine.audubon.org/webstories/deer_birth_control.html

http://www.nps.gov/fiis/deerpeople/deer.html

http://www.hsus.org/ace/12030

some less specific links for deer and birth control are here- there is some
les related stuff too

http://www.hsus.org/ace/457?searchstring=3Ddeer++birth

I hope that we can create better habitats for the birds
while finding the most humane solutions for our problem animals.

Take care,

Robbie Hunsinger
