Entomologist Robert Weidenmann of the Illinois Natural History Survey =
will share the history of purple loosestrife. This invasive alien plant =
has invaded our wetlands, threatening the biodiversity of some of our =
most valuable habitats. Weidenmann will discuss the various efforts to =
control it, focusing especially on the biological control program that =
began in the 1990s. The program utilizes two species of beetles that =
come from the same parts of Eurasia where purple loosestrife originated. =
Extensive research indicates that these little herbivores will only =
feed on purple loosestrife. Participants will be given materials to get =
started in "at home" beetle rearing. Beetles will be mailed later for =
either rearing and/or release onto participant's property. Targeted to =
adult property owners and community representatives, interested youth =
aged 14 & up are also welcome. Reservations are required; phone (815) =
