Are Harlequin Ducks ever seen here in Chicago? I hesitate to mention th=
is, because I believed they were quite rare in their normal range, and wo=
uld almost never be around here.

This morning I was kayaking on the river and my friend and I saw a duck a=
t the small dam/spillway just south of Foster and east of Kedzie. It had=
a bright spot behind the eye and a light face and grey bill. (I would n=
ot have said the face was white, as it looks in Peterson's). The duck wa=
s rather small. I looked in some guides and was dubiously assigning it a=
s an immature scoter, though I felt it was darker, largely because I don'=
t think I should be seeing Harlequin's here. =20

But then I read the favored habitat of the Harlequin - turbulent mountain=
streams. This duck was diving over and over right into the falling wate=
r of the spillway, staying there for 15 seconds or so. Once she even sur=
fed right across the wake of the spillway. I think it's a female Harlequ=
in.

If I were going to be in Chicago this weekend, I'd be going back to the p=
ark there to confirm before making reporting this, but I'll be gone, and =
since I think it's unusual, I wanted to mention it to someone to check ou=
t.

If this isn't that unusual, sorry to get overly excited.
