I was just reading a missive about voter apathy from Carl Pope, executive
director of the Sierra Club, where I do my non-birding conservation activism.
Birders' votes this year are more important than ever, especially when it
comes to national issues - like drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge and clean water and habitat protections - and more local issues - like
the Cook, Lake and DuPage County Board and Forest Preserve District land
acquisition and management. If everyone else is apathetic, birder and other
conservationists' votes will be very important and could turn crucial races!
Sierra Club carefully evaluates candidates' environmental records and intents
and makes endorsements based on in-depth questionnaires, face-to-face
meetings and long history with many candidates. If you'd like to see the
Club's endorsements, check the Illinois Chapter web site at
http://illinois.sierraclub.org/ and click on Vote 2002 in the green bar on
the left. You can also call the Sierra Club's Illinois Chapter office at
312/251-1680 and ask for a copy of the club's voter guide to be mailed to you.
