The Chicago Ornithological Society invites you to its May 20 meeting
at 7 p.m. at the Field Museum. Michael Mesure of Toronto will speak
on
Preventing Bird-Building Collisions: Lessons from Canada

Lured to the urban and suburban environment by night lighting and/or
landscaping, migrating and resident birds in the Chicagoland area are
vulnerable to fatal or debilitating collisions with buildings. Conservatively,
an estimated 100 million to 1 billion birds are killed annually by collision
with buildings in the U.S. alone. That averages out to between one and
ten individuals killed by each building in the nation. Canada is ahead
of the U.S. in studying and preventing bird-building collisions.

Michael Mesure, executive director of the Fatal Light Awareness Program
(FLAP) in Toronto, will present a lecture on the causes and solutions
to this bird conservation problem. Mr. Mesure will outline his experiences
in working with building managers, architects, window manufacturers and
public officials to reduce night lighting problems and window kills.

Enter at the west door of the Museum. Because of construction activities
in the area, it's sometimes hard to predict if parking will be available
in the west lot, although it typically is. Other parking is available
on the street to the east of the Museum. Public transportaion use can
be planned with the RTA's trip planner at:

Please join us for this timely program! For more information on what
COS and the city of Chicago are doing about
bird-building collisions, see www.chicagobirder.org./flap.html
