Thanks for this report Kristene. Now if the police could only develop some
consistency about these patrols it would go a long way toward solving this
problem. If the patrols are only occasional, even if irregular, eventually
dog owners would get the word - especially if tickets are given.

I would urge when birders see police at Montrose that we thank them for
their presence and encourage them to continue to enforce the 'No Dogs on the
Beach Law'.

Please send any responses or comments on this post or others on this subject
through BCNnet.

Subject: IBET: No Sightings - Police at Montrose

Greetings -

My husband Dave and I are working on getting "back to birding" and took a
bike ride late (9:00 am) by birding standards down to Montrose.

While not having much to report from a bird stand point. We did see an
officer in a cruiser first stopped at the beach house. The officer (or the
mere presence?) did manage to "clear the beach" dogs and owners.

While walking along the western chain link fence, I encountered two women
with a lovely pair of very enthusiastic Airedales. The dogs were not on
leash
and they began to approach me. The women called them off and apologized. I
responded (truthfully) that I am both a dog AND bird person. They smiled
and
then, having "made friends" I also noted "for what it was worth" that an
officer was in the park and they should leash their dogs. Which they did
immediately and without complaint as I was walking on.

Finally, while riding back toward the bait house ... An officer in a cruiser
"bleated" his siren at a couple and their loose dogs; calling out to them in
the process. I was past the bait house and looking over my shoulder to see
what happened next but thought I'd better watch the road. It was clear to
me
however that the officer was after these folks to leash their dogs.

Just thought those of you concerned in this regard would like to know.

Good birding and hope to see some of our old friends in the field,

Kristene (and David) Richardson
