ECE 100 - Fall 2012
Introduction to the Professions (ITP)
Course Objectives
ECE ITP is a hands-on introduction to electrical and computer engineering.
The course focuses on engineering design and problem solving via LEGO based
autonomous robots. However, engineering cannot be decoupled from broader
business, legal and scientific issues. Therefore, ECE 100 will stress the
importance of communication and teamwork in engineering by eliminating exams
and basing course grades solely on technical reports, team presentations and
teamwork.
The Course Objectives for ECE ITP are as follows:
- To provide students an exciting hands-on laboratory environment for design
and discovery.
- To improve problem solving skills.
- To improve engineering design skills.
- To improve written communication skills, especially in technical documentation.
- To improve oral presentation skills.
- To improve teamwork skills.
To achieve these goals, the teaching staff will
- Provide LEGO components, motors, sensors, a HandyBoard controller and an
Interactive C programming interface.
- Instruct students how to write programs and download them to the HandyBoard.
- Create robot competitions to exercise and develop students' problem
solving and design skills.
- Illustrate the application of mathematical and physical fundamentals to
the robot competitions.
- Encourage students to seek external sources of information and
inspiration via independent research.
- Give personalized constructive feedback to students on each of the
technical reports.
- Critique students' team presentations scheduled throughout the semester.
- Coach students to be better team players and use their time more
efficiently.
