GIC Effects on Power Transformers

Wednesday, May 9, 2018

Kushal Singh

ComEd

About the Topic

This presentation will give an overview of Geomagnetically Induced Current (GIC) and its impact on power system. The effects of Geomagnetic Disturbances (GMD) on power transformers when there is the presence of geomagnetically induced current (GIC) in a power transformer will be discussed. Transformer core designs and its components heating is presented. NERC directive TPL-007 is also briefly touched. We will also discuss the approach ComEd has taken towards GIC. The intent is to provide a background that can help understand, evaluate and determine the performance characteristics while under the influence of GIC.

About the Speaker
