The Ukraine Electric System Cyber Attacks - Moving from Lessons Observed to Lessons Learned

Wednesday, May 10, 2017

Tim Conway

SANS Institute

About the Topic

This talk will discuss recent ICS incidents from simple infections to highly targeted, multi-faceted, cyber attacks as seen in the Ukraine Electric system attacks of 2015 and 2016. A certain subset of destructive and painful attacks are taking advantage of lessons we should have learned from more casual non targeted infections. There are a number of lessons that the general control system community needs to fold back into their defense approaches. We will cover the role of malware and what defenders at all levels of the organization should expect. Learn how to become a hardened target and what capabilities are required to mount an effective response.
