Chicago Chapter 2013-2014

Based on an internal review, the presenter is unable to share the presentation slides. However, an Internet search for small modular reactor will provide most of the background material regarding new designs.

Small Modular Nuclear Reactors - Potential Benefits and Challenges

Marilyn Kray

Exelon Generation

About the Topic

Small modular reactors (SMRs) are part of a new generation of nuclear power plant designs being developed in several countries. The objective of these SMRs is to provide a flexible, cost-effective energy alternative. Small reactors are defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency as those with an electricity output of less than 300 MWe. Modular reactors are manufactured at an offsite facility and brought to the site with the nuclear and turbine islands essentially fully constructed. SMRs have unique challenges as well as advantages when compared with other baseload generation alternatives. These issues will be presented along with a status of SMR deployment in the US.

About the Speaker

Marilyn Kray is Vice President, Nuclear Project Development at Exelon Generation Company. Kray is responsible for business development for Exelon Nuclear Partners, which markets Exelon's nuclear operational expertise to both domestic and global customers. She most recently served as President of NuStart Energy Development, LLC an industry consortium formed to develop the process for preparing the Combined Operating License applications for the first wave of new nuclear plants to be constructed in the US in over 30 years.

Previously, Kray was the Vice President of Nuclear Acquisition Support and Integration. In this role, she pioneered the internal processes for due diligence and plant transitions by successfully completing the purchases of three nuclear plants: Three Mile Island, Clinton, and Oyster Creek. Kray began her career with Exelon in the licensing organization for Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. Prior to that, Kray was a Reactor Engineer and a Project Manager for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (USNRC). She has testified in front of Congress on multiple occasions on the subject of nuclear development in the US.

Kray has served in leadership roles as the Company representative to various industry groups including the Nuclear Energy Institute and the Electric Power Research Institute. Kray is the 2005 recipient of the World Nuclear Association award for Distinguished Contribution to the Peaceful Use of Nuclear Technology, and in 2007 received the American Nuclear Society's Utility Leadership Award. Under Kray's leadership, the NuStart organization was one of four finalists for the 2012 Edison Award.

Kray is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. Through completion of extensive simulator and training courses, she was certified by the USNRC to perform power operations inspections at nuclear reactor facilities.
