Testing Automated Systems

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Erich Keller, Anil Dhawan, Marina Mondello

G&W Electric and ComEd

About the Topic

Automated protection and control systems require careful incremental testing of the system. Testing relays and controllers independently is a good first step, but complete testing should progress to include as much of the system as feasible. Factory testing for automated feeders including actual switches, breakers, controls, relays and or controllers allows for complete system protection and logic testing.

The presentation will detail system testing methods that include primary current and secondary voltage testing. Specific examples will be drawn from experiences testing flexible, non-communicating loop scheme logic developed by G&W Electric and ComEd.

The presentation will show the progression from testing a single SEL-651R1 recloser control with secondary voltage and current to testing a sample system of five SEL-651R2 controls with five Viper-ST switches. The test system utilized primary current through switches connected via primary cables and secondary voltage following the system topology through auxiliary contacts and low voltage wiring.

The presentation will also detail experiences in migrating from the SEL-651R1 to the SEL-651R2 and propose best practices in developing and testing multiple, similar settings files.

About the Speakers

Marina Mondello is a senior engineer in the Distribution Automation Group at ComEd. The DA Group monitors and troubleshoots the Distribution Automation system at ComEd, along with developing settings for DA equipment. Marina has been with ComEd for 13 years in the Distribution Testing and New Business Departments prior to joining the DA Group in 2008. Marina received a BSEE from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in 2000.

Anil Dhawan is a Senior Engineer in Distribution Standards and Engineering Organization at ComEd. Anil currently serves as the technical subject matter expert supporting equipment design and standards, failure analysis, and construction and maintenance activities for Distribution and Automation related equipment. Anil has been with ComEd over 22 years supporting and providing technical expertise in various transmission substation and distribution related positions. Anil holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Howard University and is a member of IEEE and several honor societies including Tau Beta Pi.

Erich Keller is an Automation Engineer in Distribution Automation at G&W Electric Co. in Bolingbrook, IL. He is responsible for power system automation specification, design, factory acceptance testing and site commissioning. Before joining G&W, Erich was employed for seven years at ZIV USA in Des Plaines, IL. He provided technical support, project commissioning and training to utility employees using ZIV protective relays, communication and automation devices. Erich Keller received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Valparaiso University and M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology.
