About the Topic

Smart grid is the hot topic these days, but how do we put it into practice? Because we are going through a technical revolution as it relates to the substation, it is imperative that we begin to embrace the inevitable... 61850.

This presentation will focus at a high level on 61850, the protocol, the certification, the mindset. We will take a look at networking and communications in the substation and how it relates to 61850. We will also look at why 61850, and its common attributes.

About the Speaker

Jim Toepper has 18 years of data communications experience, 11 of which are focused in the industrial automation space. During this time he has written articles for Automation World and Control Engineering magazine and has recently written a whitepaper on cyber security for critical control systems. Jim's most recent role is focused on Business Development in the power market, but he has been a product manager for power oriented communications equipment for 8 years at Moxa. He has worked for such companies as US Robotics, 3Com, Digi International and is currently the business development manager for power and utilities at Moxa.

Continuing Education

IEEE technical meetings may be acceptable as continuing education where required for maintenance of professional engineering licensure. Refer to the individual state's requirements for details. A receipt for one Professional Development Hour (PDH) will be provided.
