Geo-Magnetic Disturbances

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Alan Engelmann

ComEd

About the Topic

There has been increased attention in the industry and in the media given to Geo-Magnetic Disturbances (GMD) and their potential to disrupt the power grid. This is due in part to the 11-year solar activity cycle entering its peak period, as well as in response to reports published by NERC and other entities concerning impacts and preparedness for such events. The industry has recently been directed by FERC to develop specific reliability standards to address potential GMD issues.

This presentation will provide an overview of how GMD can affect power systems, how the impacts can be studied and mitigated, and what is currently being done to address the issues.

About the Speaker

Alan Engelmann is a principal engineer in the Transmission Planning department at ComEd where he is primarily involved in the areas of generator stability, voltage stability, and dynamic voltage recovery. Alan has been with ComEd over 25 years. In addition to Transmission Planning, he has also held positions in Testing and Information Technology at ComEd. He holds a BSEE from Valparaiso University and an MSEE from Purdue University.
