VAR Compensation for Wind Plants

Wednesday, September 8, 2010

Ernst Camm

S&C Electric Co.

About the Topic

Reactive power capability, along with associated voltage, reactive power, or power factor control, are important requirements for the interconnection of large wind power plants to the grid. Due to the increasing penetration levels of wind energy into the grid, the need for wind power plants to have reactive power capabilities similar to that of conventional synchronous generators is increasing as well. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) issued general reactive power capability requirements for large wind power plants, while specific requirements related to the P-Q and V-Q characteristics and composition of reactive power equipment are still being addressed on an individual interconnection basis. This presentation will provide an overview of reactive power requirements, the reactive power capability of wind turbine generators, reactive compensation systems for large wind plants, and case studies of specific reactive compensation systems installed at large wind power plants in North America.

About the Speaker

Ernst Camm is a consultant responsible for engineering analysis in areas including power system voltage stability, wind plant modeling and interconnection, power quality, switching transients, protection, and application of large-scale power quality and dynamic reactive power compensation equipment solutions. He is a Principal Engineer at S&C Electric Company where he has been employed for nearly 18 years now. He has co-authored and presented various technical papers, articles, and seminars. He is the chairman of the IEEE Power & Energy Society's Subcommittee on Integration of Renewables into the T&D Grids and secretary of the Working Group on Dynamic Performance of Wind Power Generation. He holds a MSEE from the Ohio State University and a BSc (Eng) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
