Substation Fire Protection

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

John Bettler

ComEd

About the Topic

After a series of substation fires, ComEd embarked on a robust multi-year fire protection program to reduce risk and improve reliability. After nearly 4 years of work, the program has addressed the highest risk components based on the Root Cause Analysis performed after these fires.

At this session, John will go into the background of the Substation fire events, discuss the engineering strategies used to reduce the risk, and the difficulties of implementing the program. The program specifics include Fire Seal Penetration, Cable Wrapping, Detection, Suppression, Site Fire Plans, DC Battery Cable Protection, Standard Development and maintenance of these systems.

About the Speaker

John has been the Technical Lead of Substation Fire Protection Engineering Department at ComEd since 2005. This group was created to implement a robust fire protection program after a series of substation fires occurred. John has worked at ComEd for almost 19 years with experience in System Protection, Energy Engineering and the Field Testing Department.

John holds a BSEE from Iowa State University and a MSEE from Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). He is a Licensed PE in the State of Illinois. John also teaches Power Systems Engineering courses as part time faculty at IIT. John lives with his wife and two daughters in South Elgin.
