Application Considerations of AC Drives and Associated Machines

Wednesday, October 11, 2006

Doug Smith

ABB

About the Topic

The practical uses for Variable Frequency Drives continue to multiply and there is no end in sight. While VFDs provide tremendous advantage to plant operations, the design of distribution systems, motors, and cables must be revisited to account for power quality issues resulting from VFD installations. While VFD technology continues to evolve, the issues caused by VFDs and the associated mitigation techniques are numerous.

This presentation will discuss all facets of VFD application. Topics to be discussed include LV and MV drive design, harmonics, induced voltages, audible noise, motor specifications, feeder cable design, filters, and cost factors.
