<DIV dir=ltr>On behalf of COS, I'd like to thank all the BCN members who came out to help with the restoration work at Jarvis Sanctuary in Chicago for the Give Back to Birds Day. It was a perfect fall day, and we helped the regular Jarvis volunteers accomplish a lot, especially the cutting of snakeroot and tall goldenrod as well as various types of seed collecting, although some of us are novices at that. Thanks also to Charlotte Newfeld and Terry Schilling for their presentation on the history of Jarvis, and for the sanctuary tour. <BR> <BR>I'd also like to thank Chris and Geoff Williamson for leading the bird walk; thanks especially to Chris for organizing the work day. This walk was the culmination of nine birding and nature walks that Chris put together over the last few months as a joint effort between COS and Sierra Club. The walks have been well attended and really successful at engaging non-birders and new birders in learning about birds and other wildlife, and appreciating the the habitats at both Montrose and Jarvis. </DIV>

<P class=ecxMsoNormal>Give Back to Birds - Field Trip/Workday<BR>Jarvis Bird Sanctuary - Addison St. at Lake Michigan, Chicago<BR><BR>October 22, 2011<BR>7:00 – 8:45 a.m. Bird Walk<BR>9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Workday<BR>12:30 Brown Bag Lunch<BR><BR>The Bird Conservation Network (BCN) is sponsoring its sixth Give Back to Birds –<BR>Field Trip/Workday at the Jarvis Bird Sanctuary.<BR><BR>The Jarvis Sanctuary is a top migrant hotspot and is part of the Chicago<BR>lakefront's Important Bird Area.<BR><BR>A bird walk led by Christine and Geoff Williamson will target migrant birds<BR>around the sanctuary, as well as hawks, cranes and waterfowl migrating over the<BR>lake.<BR><BR>After the bird walk, we'll take a quick break for coffee, cinnamon rolls and a<BR>brief history of the Sanctuary and the restoration work being done at the site<BR>from the steward, Terry Schilling.<BR><BR>The Jarvis Sanctuary is undergoing its 10th year of habitat restoration in 2011<BR>and the expert stewardship team is gradually eliminating most introduced species<BR>and adding native understory<BR>plants, trees, shrubs and grasses. Our crew will join a well-established group<BR>of volunteers to assist in the transformation, including weeding, brush cutting<BR>and seeding.</P>
<P class=ecxMsoNormal>The trip is co-sponsored by the Sierra Club and the Chicago Ornithological<BR>Society.<BR><BR>This trip is open only to persons aged 18 and over, because of insurance<BR>restrictions.<BR><BR>This Saturday field trip/workday will take place rain or shine. Dress in layers,<BR>with sturdy shoes.<BR><BR>Bring lunch if you would like to picnic after the workday. Dessert will be<BR>provided for those who stay for lunch, if you still have room after Anne<BR>Sather's cinnamon rolls!<BR><BR>BCN would like to know how many to plan for.
