Every year there's going to be some factor affecting the Illinois Spring Bird Count. Last year's count was on May 4th, and the early date and earlier weather meant not as many migrants had come through Cook County yet, as we ended up with 'only' 190 species recorded. The prior year, in 2018, birders found 208 species in Cook County.

This year of course, a number of areas will be off limits (Chicago lakefront parks, a number of Cook County Nature Centers closed, a few other preserve parking lots closed on weekends as well as some other locations), and many birders just might not be able to get out away from home as much, or limited in other ways.

The statewide count will still go on (see https://www.inhs.illinois.edu/collections/birds/sbc/ ), even though other counties will see similar or other closures. At least some of the state parks will be open.

If you are interested in helping, contact the compiler in your county:
https://www.inhs.illinois.edu/collections/birds/sbc/county-compilers/

In Cook County, those who have helped in the past, and who's area is not closed or otherwise off limits, can still help in the same areas. Others who's area is closed off can help in preserves that often are not covered at all or very well (especially in southwest or south central Cook); State Compiler Tara Beveroth is encouraging others to bird from their backyard (natural habitat, or feeders offering varied foods - sunflower, nyjer seed, peanuts, safflower, oranges, jelly etc) might attract a variety of birds) or neighborhood this year also. Feel free to contact me if you'd like to help out. ( entering your species lists and numbers into eBird, having eBird email you the checklist, and forwarding that info to me is the easiest way to get me the info).

Below is the species list from 2019 for Cook County (easier to see or find sometimes than the state site).

And thanks again to all who have volunteered or helped in the past or this year!
