BCNnet friends:

Dr. George Fenwick, the President and CEO of the American Bird Conservancy
(ABC) will be appearing before the DuPage Bird Club on Thursday, November
11, 2010, 7:30 PM, at the Faith Lutheran Church, 41 N. Park Blvd (just
north of Roosevelt Rd.), in Glen Ellyn.

Dr. Fenwick has been active in conservation and particularly bird
conservation for some 36 years, including 16 years with the award winning
Virginia Chapter of The Nature Conservancy and as Director for 6 years.
During the last 16 years he founded and is President of ABC.

ABC is uniquely the only organization in the world whose sole mission is the
protection of wild birds and their habitat throughout the western
hemisphere. Here are just a few of ABC's achievements under George's
leadership:

.

* Helping to create, expand and sustain more than 40 globally
significant biodiversity reserves in eleven countries that provide critical
habitat for more than 200 endangered species

* Initially created the only staffed pesticide program in the United
States working to block or restrict EPA's registration of pesticides that
pose unreasonable risks to the environment based on wildlife concerns.

* Creating the predominant national education outreach program - Cats
Indoors! - to address the growing wildlife and animal rights issue of people
abandoning their cats into natural areas, parks, and neighborhoods.

* Tackling the greatest policy-based threats to birds (and other
biodiversity) from climate change, invasive species, poor land management,
collisions with man-made buildings, seabird by-catch in fisheries and
others, all of which are taking a toll.

This will be his first presentation following the most recent publication of
The American Bird Conservancy Guide to Bird Conservation which he
co-authored and he will speak about the new book, the current status and
future of bird conservation, and what citizens can do that will truly help
save birds. The new guide is the most thorough and scientifically credible
assessment of threats to birds of the Americas ever published. George will
also speak on the current and future work of ABC.

Dr. Fenwick was nominated for the Indianapolis Prize in 2008, received the
ABA's Chandler Robbins Award in 2009, the Partners in Flight Champion of
Bird Conservation Award in 2010, and most recently was honored with the
naming of the newly discovered Fenwick's Antpitta (Grallaria fenwickorum).

If you have any interest in birds and bird conservation this is a talk you
won't want to miss.
