On July 22, 2008, the Commissioners of Cook County will finalize
incorporating this language into ordinance:
(f) New construction and major renovation projects shall incorporate
bird-safe building materials
and design features, including, but not limited to, those recommended by the
City of Chicago's "Bird-
Safe Building Design Guide for New Construction and Renovation," the City of
Toronto's "Bird-Friendly
Development Guidelines," and New York City Audubon's "Bird-Safe Building
Guidelines."
(g) The County shall make existing buildings bird-safe where practicable.
The Commission's construction committee approved the language today; the
July 22 vote is pro forma. Judy Pollock, Donnie Dann and I spoke at the
meeting but we were somewhat superfluous. The county construction department
director 'gets it' and he said all the right things about minimal costs
involved, etc. The commissioners in attendance actually seemed to be
interested.
This is just specific to the 100+ buildings owned by the county but they
voluntarily committed to extend it to those unincorporated parts of the
county that fall under the County's zoning jurisdiction, mostly to set an
example for the 120+ municipalities in the County that do their own zoning.
The same bird-safe language will go through the Commissioners acting for the
FP too.
