From donniebird at yahoo.com Tue Nov 6 05:09:08 2007 From: donniebird at yahoo.com (Donnie Dann) Date: Tue Nov 6 05:09:19 2007 Subject: [BCNnet] Wind Energy - a rational formula Message-ID: <001801c82065$74665b70$0200a8c0@DONNIERTMEJESV> As we all know wind power as a source of energy is beneficial to birds. It creates zero carbon emissions and causes significantly lower habitat disturbance than fossil fuel extraction. Yet wind turbines can also be a source of mortality to birds and bats, especially when poorly sited. As a result many birders continue to be conflicted by the increasing use of wind power. The following is from Paul Bacich's E-Bulletin, and could serve as a national model for wind farms as they continue to be established. Donnie Dann Highland Park/Lake County donniebird@yahoo.com CALIFORNIA WINDPOWER GUIDELINES RELEASED Also from California, in late September the California Energy Commission voted unanimously to adopt voluntary windpower guidelines. The 80-page "Guidelines to Reduce Impacts of Windpower on Birds and Bats" is a joint product of the Commission and the California Department of Fish and Game. Regionally, Audubon California, the Golden Gate and Los Angeles Audubon chapters, Defenders of Wildlife, and Sierra Club all strongly supported the guidelines. Starting in 2006, key players from both the windpower industry and wildlife conservation groups met to discuss possible solutions to windpower problems. These initial discussions ultimately led to the 80-page set of guidelines. The guidelines can be downloaded at: http://www.energy.ca.gov/2007publications/CEC-700-2007-008/CEC-700-2007-008- CTF-MINUS-APF.PDF -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The main emphasis of the program will be the major stream restoration project that is about 50% complete at the site and will include a demonstration on how the new streambed is being constructed. Staff from DuPage FPD will be there to lead the program and tour. Since the work is in progress, you will be able to see the old channelized stream, ongoing construction, and sections of the new stream meanders. I will also be there to talk about the grassland bird populations and how the new project will improve avian habitat at the site. See the following announcement for details and RSVP. Joe Suchecki Site Steward and Bird Monitor Springbrook Prairie Chicago Wilderness Habitat Clinic (November 17, 2007) Springbrook Creek -Restoration Project The Habitat Project and Volunteer Stewardship Network invite all restoration volunteers, monitors, interpreters, advocates, and interested members of the public to join us for this Habitat Clinic at Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve. In keeping with the Clinic's summer theme, best practices, this two and half- hour-long clinic will feature on the spot field presentations. Springbrook Prairie, DUPAGE COUNTY, IL Saturday, November, 17th. 9:30 a.m. to noon As part of ongoing restoration and habitat improvement of Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve, the District is in the process of building a new meandering stream channel on approximately 2 miles of Springbrook Creek, a tributary of the DuPage River. The primary objective is to improve habitat, reduce bank erosion and improve water quality by reconnecting the stream to the historic flood plain. Stream channel design will incorporate improved fish, mollusk and macro invertebrate habitat. Over 20 years of USGS gage station data combined with detailed cross-sectional and longitudinal profiles of the stream is the scientific basis for developing dimensions, patterns and profiles for the stream. The new stream bed is elevated to normal entrenchment conditions and features a pool and riffle pattern. The new channel is constructed with the use of natural materials and designed to re-saturate a riparian wetland/floodplain zone. Construction zones will be stabilized with native species consistent with preserve wide restoration plans. Project Manger and Natural Resource Management Supervisor Leslie Berns, and Sites Stewards Joe Suchecki and Nancy Novak will discuss: * The process of building the new stream channel * Grassland bird usage and results from 10 years of point count surveys. * Volunteer restoration progress * Restoration plans over the long term Participants are welcome to stay for lunch afterwards and lend a hand during the Nature Workday scheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Light refreshments will be served at noon Please register by mailing Shelley Ancheta at sancheta@... or by calling 847-965-9239. Eric Ginsburg ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Chris Altwegg Date: Nov 7, 2007 3:45 PM Subject: Calling all friends of BirdNote! To: Chris Altwegg Calling all friends of BirdNote(R)! Thanks for being a friend of BirdNote! We'd like to ask a favor. You may not know that BirdNote is completely supported by individual donors, along with one small foundation. Like all other independently produced shows, KPLU does not pay for the show, nor will other radio stations. They provide the valuable airtime. It costs over $200,000 per year for our production team of staff, writers, narrator, and producers to put together this quality program. We're grateful to our current financial supporters who make BirdNote possible. They've been doing all the "heavy lifting." As we get ready for our fourth year of bringing BirdNote to you on the air, it's time to find additional donors who can help finance this wonderful, independent program. If you or someone you know can help, we'd like to hear from you. Can you recommend someone we might talk to? Would you like to become a "BirdNote benefactor" yourself? We're looking for gifts of $50 to $50,000. You may donate online at www.birdnote.org or mail a check to BirdNote's non-profit parent, Tune In to Nature, 8441 SE 68th Street, PMB 206, Mercer Island, WA 98040. We also have a way if you'd like to make a gift of stock. To learn more, please contact Chris Peterson, Executive Director, at 206-724-2714 or chrisp@birdnote.org. One of BirdNote's ultimate goals is to bolster the ranks of people who care about birds and nature?and want to do something to protect them. Like you, we want people to "tune in and take notice." By supporting BirdNote, you can help us achieve that goal. Thanks for your help. We're glad you're out there listening. The best is yet to come! This announcement was at the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Chicago Academy of Sciences. The tie-in is that one of the Academy trustees is good friends with the owner of Guardian. That's what got Guardian, and more importantly, Jemssy involved. When the company management declined to pursue the product (due to a total lack of customer demand as far as they could see), Jemssy did the research himself. Per Jemssy, what they have done is determine that the creation of the bird-safe glass is easy to do and does not hinder any other aspects of the glass that buyers want or need. This is still not a product that Guardian sells because testing has yet to be done at the level required for commercial products. The way to get Guardian to fund this testing is to create demand. That demand is not limited to paying customers. Calls from public officials, construction and architecture industry experts, etc., can be just as attention-getting. Please take any opportunity you have to tell architects, buildings and public officials about the new glass.
