One of my sources at my paper told me about the story in the NY Times  
magazine yesterday about the Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Here's the link:

I liked the story as much for the very accurate description of what bird  
watching IS, as much as for the detail about the IBW search. It's long, but a  
very good read.
