Hi Randi,

It is my understanding that this is a move to block a developer from being
able to get access to his land through FPD land. The land he is trying to
get access to is buffer land that the District is attempting to acquire. I
will report back more after the board meeting today.

This is off the IBET list serv. I don't know what it means in terms of the
proposed action by the FP tomorrow.

Dear IBET Fellow Bird Lovers:
Last night the Village of Westchester DID NOT VOTE to sell land to
developers that is an important bird habitat, land that borders a rare
ecosystem in Illinois, a black earth prairie and savannah. We all know that
if bird habitats are continually shrunken by us that some species may not
survive and anyone who wishes to and has time to become involved can do so
now. They meet again in 2 weeks and may vote then.
Please address any polite positive comments to:

Professional letterheads from birding organizations could be especially
helpful according to a person who has devoted much time since 1978 to this
area.
It is a great birding spot, with "Harrier Marsh" and a rich diversity of
native plant species and even a few dead trees. Try it, you'll like it!
I would like the person who wrote something to the effect that Westchester
is more likely to be visited and remembered if it continues to practice
sound land management and conservation rather than permit more homes and
strip malls.
Like all competing suburbs they do need money and they can attract more
people by having this "rare gem" inviting families and individuals
(including those
confined to wheelchairs) to learn more about and to enjoy nature. As one of
you quoted (but didn't catch the name of the author and accidentally deleted
the exact quote) we protect what we love and we love what we are able to be
taught to know- please forgive my weak memory and please do find the correct
quote and mail it to Westchester. It certainly can do no harm and may do
much good.
As another person put it, teaching us to regain our love of nature is "like
teaching Chinese" to someone who was raised to speak only some other
language. We can all "get it" if we hear it often enough from enough
different people.
Heartfelt thanks to the Save the Prairie Society for all the years and hours
of enjoyable birding and educational programs (all volunteer, all free). And
may we all be winners in this one! (The EPA is already involved so no need
to accent any possible negatives unless you know the developers personally
and are concerned for their own physical and mental health and can talk to
them personally.)

PS Our Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Cook County Forest

election is coming up.
