JOB SUMMARY

American Bird Conservancy (ABC) has received a three-year Multi-State Grant
to develop a comprehensive bird monitoring framework for the 13 states of
the Northeastern United States. The Northeast Bird Monitoring Coordinator
will oversee all aspects of the implementation of this grant. The
Coordinator will work closely with the two co-supervising organizations as
well as with the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences, the Northeast
Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, all Northeastern state
wildlife agencies, and many other partners in the region.

JOB DUTIES

1. Develop a comprehensive bird-monitoring framework for
the Northeast, working with partners and building upon numerous existing
programs. Complete a framework document at the end of year 1 of the grant.

2. Organize and facilitate two regional workshops per year,
designed to gain consensus on the nature and components of this framework,
developing a strategy for implementing priority monitoring programs, and
developing and facilitating the use of a regional system for data
management.

3. Work with partners at Cornell to develop a web site to
support this framework and a greatly improved regional monitoring data
management system.

4. Manage a subcontract with Manomet to implement
monitoring of migrating shorebirds and secretive marshbirds in the
Northeast.

5. Manage other subcontracts in which various key
components of Northeast bird monitoring will be supported.

6. Facilitate the exchange of information regarding ongoing
monitoring efforts and additional monitoring needs among the staff of state
agencies and other partners throughout the Northeast.

7. Work with partners to identify and obtain the financial
resources necessary to meet regional monitoring objectives and to achieve
sustainability of coordinated monitoring programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will possess the broadest combination of the
characteristics listed below.

1. A sufficiently detailed understanding of the concepts,
protocols, and statistical design of bird monitoring to be able to develop a
comprehensive monitoring framework.

2. Familiarity with the distribution, habitat use, and
conservation status of the birds of the Northeastern United States.

3. Experience in participating within one or more of the
various bird conservation initiative partnerships (Partners in Flight,
Shorebird Conservation Plan, Waterbird Conservation for the Americas, North
American Waterfowl Management Plan).

4. A capacity to interact on a collegial basis with a broad
spectrum of partners, including senior agency staff, ornithologists, and
statisticians.

5. Excellent communication skills, including demonstrated
leadership in consensus-building and facilitating group workshops.

6. Commitment to the missions of ABC and the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology and the importance of monitoring as a component of bird
conservation.

7. Willingness to locate in Ithaca, New York, for the three
years of this project and, during that time, to travel frequently to
regional and national conservation meetings.
