Whooper Reintroduction Updates

Current Trip: Fall 2005 Eastern Whooping Crane Migration
Entry October 10

Departure Date Extended, October 10, 2005

Today's scheduled departure for the ultralight-led migration of 20 Whooping
Cranes from Necedah National Wildlife Refuge has been rescheduled for later
this week. "Unfortunately, we've had to postpone our target departure date
until October 14. We felt the birds could use some more training. This will
also give our crew more time to get ready for the departure, plus there's
more favourable weather predicted towards the end of the week," said Mark
Nipper, Operation Migration <http://www.operationmigration.org/> 's Field
Supervisor.

This year the field crew is working with the largest group of cranes to
date--20 Whooping Cranes! Wisconsin's uncooperative fall weather has limited
the number of training days with the birds. The extra days this week will
give crew and birds a chance to prepare for the 1,228 mile migration down to
the Chassahowitzka NWR along Florida's Gulf Coast. The new departure date of
October 14 is in line with previous year's departures:

2001: 10/17
2002: 10/13
2003: 10/16
2004: 10/10
