A Sierra Club contact from the DeKalb area has asked me for advice about how
to handle doing a Christmas Count in an area that also is actively hunted.
They know there are Pileated Woodpeckers present at this IDNR site which would
be a new species for their count circle, but no one wants to bird the area
because hunters also are actively using the area.
Has anyone out there figured out a way to avoid the conflict? How did you
set it up? Did you ask for a one-day hunting ban with the IDNR or US Fish &
Wildlife Service? Or perhaps by asking the hunters' clubs in the area to avoid
the site on that day?
Any advice you can offer would be appreciated.
THANKS!
