CALUMET RESEARCH SUMMIT

The Chicago Department of Environment will host a CALUMET RESEARCH SUMMIT 
to be held Tuesday, January 10 and Wednesday, January 11, 2006,  8:30 am - 
4:30 pm.

Location: The Center, Purdue University Calumet, 2300 173rd Street, Hammond, 
Indiana

The summit will begin with a review of the plans that have helped shape the 
research agenda: the development of the Calumet Open Space Reserve, the 
completion of the Ecological Management Strategy, as well as the Ecotox Protocol,  
Stewardship Initiative, and Hydrologic Master Plan. The summit will conclude 
with a discussion of data gaps, synergies, and next steps.

Some 31 speakers will be featured, with topics including wildlife, ecotox, 
hydrology, social & economic implications, and soil alternatives & 
infrastructure. Panel discussions will also be held.

TREE SWALLOWS AS MONITORS OF CONTAMINANT RISKS TO INSECTIVOROUS BIRDS NESTING 
IN CALUMET WETLANDS

An exploration of the use of Tree Swallows to determine whether insectivorous 
birds nesting in the Calumet area wetlands are exposed to high levels of

Why the Yellow-headed Blackbird poulation is declining, and what can be done 
to preserve the current population and restore a larger population withing the 
Calumet wetlands.

IMPACTS OF RECREATION ON CALUMET'S NESTING BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS: 
RESEARCH FINDINGS AND A SIMULATION TOOL FOR COMPARING ALTERNATIVE RECREATION 
SCENARIOS

A study of a Calumet rookery of nesting Black-crowned Night-Herons, and their 
behavioral responses to simulations of nearby human activity. The results 
will be used to compare the impacts on the rookery of alternative scenarios for 
recreation in and around Indian Ridge Marsh.
