[Main address for commissioners]
Commissioner
Forest Preserve District of Cook County
Room 567
118 N. Clark Street
Chicago, IL 60602

Steven M. Bylina, Jr.
General Superintendent
Forest Preserve District of Cook County
536 North Harlem Avenue
River Forest, IL 60305

If you have an opinion about the expansion of dog parks in the Cook County
FP, it is about time to start sending your cards and letters. The year-long
"pilot" at Beck Lake soon will be up. The FP staff has told us that there are
several groups who are working on DFAs besides the Thatcher Dog group. All
action has been pending the end of the Beck Lake pilot.

You may want to review the Thatcher Dog website --www.thatcherdog.com. Read
about the process they've been going through, the new area they are targeting
(in the Salt Creek area), etc.

If you live in Cook County and know who your commissioner is, I'd suggest
writing him or her, and definitely copy in the General Superintendent. If you
don't know who your commissioner is, you may be able to figure it out from
their website map: http://www.cookcountygov.com/commissioners.htm .

Ultimately, a letter to Mr. Bylina will serve the purpose since he will have
to make a recommendation to the board. (Important note: there is no
indication that he wants dog parks although his staff is cooperating with Thatcher Dog.
They may have no choice at this point given that the Commissioners did
approve the dog park concept with Beck Lake.)

Supposedly there will be some discussion this summer about the overall
subject of land use (based on a resolution Mike Quigley is trying to get on the
agenda). There is no way to tell where the dog park issue will fall in the
timing. If there is a commissioner who strongly wants another dog park, the board
may be forced to deal with the dog park issue before any land use resolution
is passed that would prohibit it. (No commissioner appears to be promoting
dog parks but there are many who view the Forest Preserves as a source of
political gifts so anything is possible.)

Please note: the Board just expanded Beck Lake (using the funds from the dog
owners) so calling for its removal is probably useless and may deflect
attention from your main points.
