I'm forwarding a note from Carol and Paul Strand asking for
support for listing the Franklin's ground squirrel in Illinois; listing
this species may help to save the Swainson's Hawk population.

We happened to see the Sunday, Feb. 15 Chicago Sun-Times--Metro
Section, Page 22A. An article was written by Zay N. Smith about the
Franklin's Ground Squirrel disappearing from Illinois. He
interviewed Oliver Pergams, a conservation biologist at Brookfield
Zoo. Pergams said there are now fewer than 350 in Illinois.
The Illinois Endangered Species Board meets every five years and
Pergams and Dennis Nyberg, a biology professor at the University of
Illinois at Chicago, testified on behalf of the squirrel in 1999.
The board was not convinced, even though the squirrel is listed on the
endangered species list of fourteen states, including Wisconsin, Indiana,
Iowa and Missouri. The Illinois board's next meeting will be
this Friday, Feb. 20. If you would like to comment to the
IL Endangered Species Board, please email them at the following
