Nine- Month Consultant Announcement
The Rainforest Alliance

Title:Consultant for Project Development of Mainstreaming Biodiversity
Conservation into Coffee Production & Sales through Private Sector
  Sourcing Partnership
Sustainable Agriculture Division: Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, Peru
Reports to: Director, Sustainable Agriculture Division
Location: Costa Rica but open to other locations within the region
Time Line: Nine (9) month position beginning January 2005

The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an international nonprofit organization
dedicated to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that depend on
them by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer
behavior. Companies, cooperatives and landowners that participate in our
programs meet rigorous standards that conserve biodiversity and provide
sustainable livelihoods.

The Purpose of the Assignment:
The Rainforest Alliance (RA) and its partner members of the Sustainable
Agriculture Network (SAN), Sustainable Agriculture Network a coalition of
independent, nonprofit, locally-based conservation groups, of which the RA
is both a member and the International Secretariat - will work with
selected coffee companies across six Latin American countries to transform
the way that coffee is sourced. This initiative aims to increase the
presence of certified sustainable coffee along the supply chain, promoting
production practices that protect biodiversity and improve the economic
well-being of coffee farmers and workers in the region. The project will
also establish new, environmentally and socially responsible ways of doing
business that participating stakeholders can internalize and replicate to
other sites across the coffee production landscape.

The activities of the consultant are to work toward developing a full
project document with objectives and strategies that will strengthen local
and institutional capacity to sustainably produce coffee, thus removing
environmental threats to ecosystems - erosion, deforestation, water
pollution, agricultural encroachment. The Project Development Facility
Biodiversity (PDF B) activities will also identify, and then define
strategies to strengthen, the financial incentives to sustainable coffee
production and sale. The involvement and knowledge of the entire supply
chain is one of the hallmarks of this GEF project, setting it apart. It is
not a "site-based" or single-market based or desk-based initiative.

The Task
The consultant will outline program implementation activities, identify
consultants to hire and recommend methods for the delivery of program
services to meet the mandated requirements of the project including the
hiring of consultants, implementing project activities and writing final
proposal. Most importantly, identify project stakeholders (including but
not limited to: UNDP, various country environment and agriculture
ministers) and manage a Stakeholders' participatory planning process.
