WHOOPERS FINALLY FLORIDA BOUND: After waiting over a week for strong=20
headwinds to subside, a third generation of whooping cranes has begun=20
their 1,228-mile migration from Wisconsin to Florida reports the=20
Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune 10/17. Although five of the birds=20
turned back, three ultralight aircraft led 9 of the birds to the first=20
stopover site 23 miles away. Five reluctant flyers and one injured=20
bird will be brought to the stopover by the ground crew. Twenty cranes=20
from the previous two migrations are "likely to begin their unassisted=20
migration within the next few weeks."
