This is an article that I wrote for the Habitat Herald at the end of =
2000. The Henslow's sparrow had appeared at the Poplar Creek =
restoration site in Hoffman Estates (Cook County)- finally!- and I was =
thrilled! There had been considerable chatter on IBET about the =
increases in Henslow's populations in our area that year but, at that =
time, there were folks who were still very cautious about their "staying =
power." =20
As most of you know, Jim Herkert, who was quoted extensively in this =
article, is now Science Director of The Nature Conservancy in =
Springfield (at least I think that's his title!) and a member of the =
Endangered Species Protection Board. At the writing of this article, =
Jim was not convinced that the increases were any more than temporary =
due to a variety of factors.
If anyone is interested, I could forward e-mails from folks in other =
parts of the state from this same time. Since then, the subject seems =
to have faded from the landscape but I will post this question to BCN =
and post any responses to this listserv.
By the way, we had Henslow's in 2000 and 2001 but I have not seen or =
heard one since on the main restoration site. And I had seen no signs =
of nesting either year. We have some prime habitat for Henslow's but I =
cannot say I have seen any evidence of their interest other than those =
two years.

Subject: [vsn-stewards] Endangered Species List
Hello everyone,
I read an article recently that reported changes in the Endangered =
Species List, among them being the change of the Henslow's Sparrow from =
endangered to threatened. There were a number of other changes, but =
this is the one that caught my eye--even as a non-birder I am familiar =
with this species.
Do we dare to conclude that habitat restoration is even a part of the =
success of Henslow's Sparrow? Or is it something else? Or does anyone =
know?
