I run two BBS routes, one in the Chicago area and one out in the =
country. The Chicago area route, Yorkville, didn't show much difference =
in crows, and only a slight drop in Blue Jays and chickadees. However, =
the Compton route in Lee and Ogle Counties shows a huge declline in crow =
numbers this year.=20
I ran the Yorkville BBS route on June 15 and the crow numbers were in =
line with previous years. This route has only been in existence since =
2001 so the data set is not all that large. This route runs east from =
Route 47 and Ament Road in Kendall County through Will county on Renwick =
Road, Weber Road, and 135th street to Main Street and Archer Avenue in =
Cook County.=20
On June 21, I had only 2 crows on the Compton BBS route ! There are =
usually about 20 crows at the VFW Park in Rochelle alone on this route, =
and the average crow count since 1994 is 31. This year was the first =
time that Black-capped Chickadee has been recorded on the Compton BBS =
route!=20
Here are the yearly crow, Blue Jay, and Chickadee totals from these two =
BBS routes back to 1994.=20

Subject: [BCNnet] BCN- Further Evidence of Crow Decline
Not to start up the whole West Nile debate again, but I thought BCN =
would be interested in some new data. I completed my Fish And Wildlife =
Service Breeding Bird Survey Route that runs through DuPage County from =
near Wayne down to Bolingbrook. This is a standardized census that has =
been run for over forty years - starting in 1966.
I thought that Crow numbers seemed low, so I checked the previous =
years' data which indicated that over the last five years the average =
numbers of crows seen along the route was 70. In 2002, I had 85 crows.
This year, I only counted 12 crows, - a record low for over 40 years =
of data collection.
Blue Jays were only slightly lower than average - I counted 9 and the =
average is about 14, and Chickadees were right on the average at 11.
Other species such as Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds, Song Sparrows, =
House Wrens were somewhat higher this year.
There are three other BBS routes in the Chicago area and it would be =
interesting to see if those observers noted similar results.
