Birders and Conservationists –
We all know the enormous toll taken on birds and wildlife because of
predation by house cats. One of the most serious and persistent problems in
this regard is the feral cat colonies maintained by organizations like Alley
Cat Allies, Operation Catnip, and others. They urge a program of trap,
neuter, release, or TNR, reasoning that in time, these colonies will
diminish because of natural mortality. It doesn’t work that way as these
cat colonies only continue to expand and decimate native species where they
are allowed.
In McHenry County such a group has tentatively succeeded in getting the
Animal Control Committee of the County Health Department to approve an
18-month test program legally sanctioning such a colony. However, it’s not
too late to fight this proposal.
This Wednesday evening, July 9th, at 7:00PM, a public hearing is being held
at the Animal Control office, 11608 Banford Rd, Woodstock, IL. It would be
great if you could attend in person and express your opposition to any
legalization of feral cat colonies, but at the very least, please send an
email along the lines of the following to these 2 individuals, to protest
this action.

“I’m writing to oppose the establishment of legal free-roaming or feral cat
colonies in McHenry County. It is well known that the loss of native birds
and other wildlife, including endangered species, to outdoor cats is in the
hundreds of millions of animals a year. Cats are not native, and even if
well-fed will kill because it is instinctive for them to do so. Moreover,
allowing cats to roam free is bad for the cats as they are subject to
infectious disease, fights with dogs and other cats, and are killed by cars.
Finally, passing such a law is probably contrary to Federal Wildlife
protection laws, like the Endangered Species Act and Migratory Bird Treaty
Act. Thank you.”
