CRANES SET ENDURANCE RECORD: The third-generation of whooping cranes,=20
on an ultra-light aircraft guided migration from Wisconsin to Florida,=20
have almost reached their destination after a marathon one-day 200 mile=20
flight, the longest ever for Operation Migration says the St.=20
Petersburg Times 12/2. "Rough weather and poor wind conditions have=20
grounded the cranes for 30 of the 47 days, with the journey over the=20
Appalachian Mountains being "particularly difficult." Some of the=20
older birds from the previous two years' migration have already=20
returned to Florida's Chessahowitzka N.W.R. "unaided by human guides"=20
and the 16 birds from this year's flock could arrive at the refuge as=20
early as Thursday, December 4.
