Date: Thursday, March 14
Time: 7:00 p.m. refreshments, 7:30 program
Place: Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, Schaumburg
Subject: The State of Nature in the Forest Preserves of Cook County
Speaker: Steve Packard, Director, Audubon of the Chicago Region
How healthy are the natural areas in the Cook County forest preserves today?
Packard will describe the results of an unprecedented new study that answers
this question. In the summer of 2001, the Friends of the Forest Preserves,
Friends of the Parks, and Sierra Club undertook a scientific examination of
the vegetation throughout the preserves. Under the direction of Wayne Lampa
of the Conservation Research Institute, 89 volunteer botanists collected
data from 1,720 random plots. The initial results from this study were just
made public on February 26. Packard will describe the most important
findings from this widely anticipated work, and he will discuss what needs
to be done to secure the future of Cook County's rich natural heritage.
Packard is an engaging and inspiring speaker who has been on the forefront
of work to protect biodiversity throughout our region for decades.
Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary is on the south side of Schaumburg Road
between Meacham and Plum Grove Roads.
